In the corporate landscape, upgrading and transitioning to keep up with technology and trends is needed to stay competitive. This could mean modernizing an older decor to make it more appealing to customers in the store or upgrading the computer infrastructure to run more efficiently.

It is not unheard of for companies to have multiple projects lined up at once and the success of all these requires proper execution one project at a time. Unfortunately, many companies lack strong project management skills.

Oracle’s John Foley examined this in a recent article for Forbes. Citing a survey the company commissioned of the manufacturing industry, 87 percent of the 366 executives polled said aging infrastructure has had an impact on operations. Going a step further, 43 percent said the biggest impact was the risk of operational failure.

“What does that have to do with project management? Given the critical nature of this infrastructure, it’s imperative that leaders in these companies make the right choices about where to invest limited resources and execute with precision. And many of the execs surveyed are simply not confident in their project-planning capabilities,” Foley wrote.

The survey found that the second biggest obstacle to successful upgrades is poor project planning and due diligence, which was only beat out by budget. Lack of experienced staff and red tape were both lower on the list.
