Teenager involved in ‘biggest cyber attack in history’

When you hear that the “biggest cyber attack in history” has taken place, you probably get an image of a large shadowy organization that is spread throughout the world, filled with seasoned hackers and run like a crime syndicate from an 80s action movie. However, what if I told you a 16-year-old “schoolboy from London” was involved?

According to a report from the London Evening Standard, it was just announced that two suspects were arrested in April in connection with the “distributed denial of service (DDoS)” attack that focused on Dutch anti-spam group Spamhaus. The first is primary suspect Sven Olaf Kampuis and the other is a still unnamed 16-year-old. Exactly what role the boy played in the attack is still unknown.

Spamhaus provides a “blacklist” to internet providers of websites that are responsible for the junk email that fills inboxes. This allows these sites to be blocked so they do not affect users. It is estimated that 80 percent of the global email spam is blocked because of this.

The attack they faced was a massively scaled up version of a typical DDoS. This is where hackers use servers or botnets to point large amounts of fake traffic at a target in hopes of overloading the host server and knocking it offline. This attack ran at 300 gigabits per second, well above average, and the clogging of essential internet infrastructure caused global services to slow down, according to a Mashable article

Kampuis claims to be a spokesperson for the group Cyberbunk and spoke out against Spamhaus​, saying the company should not be able to determine what is allowed on the internet.

Cyber crime units from several countries are still investigating the attack, but it shows how powerful and widespread hacking groups are becoming.
