When you think of areas that would be a hot bed of younger IT talent that local businesses could scoop up quickly, two cities near the top of that list would be Boston and San Francisco. With younger populations, a number of colleges and popular tech companies, these two areas would seem like a mecca for IT professionals.

However, even these areas are not immune to the effects of the IT skills gap. According to the Federal Reserve’s Beige Book, businesses in the New England area are struggling to find impactful professionals.

When describing the Boston area, the report reads: “There remains a shortage of skilled technical workers to fill high-end IT and engineering jobs. The general consensus is that despite a large pool of available workers, the skills mismatch prevents staffing firms from fully meeting client demand.”

The outlook was not much better for San Francisco as the report noted that companies are “competing vigorously” for a “limited pool of qualified workers.”

All of this competition is causing wages to start to skyrocket as more organizations are willing to pay a higher premium to bring in the most high-quality talent to get through these slim times. One hiring executive interviewed in a ComputerWorld article about the study said that the increase has been 10 to 15 percent over the last six months alone.

Finding impactful IT talent is hard, and the process seems to be getting more difficult every day. VAR Staffing helps technology solution providers get past this challenge and recruit the most impactful talent to their teams.
