The fact that cyber security is an important part of today's business world and the IT channel is not surprising. In fact, if you were to walk around your office and find out who was responsible for keeping critical company data safe, that should be easy, right? You might think so, but a recent article in Harvard Business Review suggests otherwise.

In the piece, author Joel Brenner talks about the times he has asked "Who is responsible for your data security?" within various companies, and continually has had C-level executives pass the buck to someone else.

In reality there is no one person in charge of a cyber security system. Instead, everyone needs to understand their role, what it means and how they can be successful. Brenner mentions that there are numerous factors that determine whether a cyber security plan is effective, which includes legal considerations, human resources issues, operational configurations and the technical expertise that each of them need to be overseen properly.

"But while each of these silo chieftains owns a piece of the problem, […] some of them don't know it, and none of them owns the whole thing," Brenner wrote. "This makes information security a risk management and governance challenge, because unless these people attack the challenge together under a C-suite mandate, it can't be managed effectively. Unfortunately this rarely happens."

Getting everyone on the same page can be difficult. By partnering with an IT solution provider that specializes in cyber security, any company can start improving its data protection. If that MSP works with VAR Staffing, it can ensure top notch talent is helping make decisions.
