With the ever-evolving list of potential IT investments that technology decision-makers need to choose from, there is an interesting undercurrent developing. Namely, the slow melding of several skills in order to successfully manage a number of IT services and solutions.

A recent ZDNet article examined this trend, using the example of how data centers now require cross-functional skills. This is becoming important because the dynamics are changing as IT becomes embedded in business-related activities.

The piece notes that IT professionals can no longer rest on a single skill set to get by managing a company's database and servers. Instead, other factors like a complete understanding of IT, facilities and security expertise are required. This means that in the event of a data center encountering a slowdown, power and cooling challenges or a shift to the cloud, one person or team should be able to handle all of these issues.

Sunil Chavan, the director of software and cloud solutions Hitachi Data Systems, told the news source that demand for well-rounded IT professionals is outpacing availability. On top of that, niche IT skills are expected to become obsolete in a few years.

He added that knowledge in security is near the top of the list for every IT Principal. The evolution of data centers is driven largely by the demand for the shift to the cloud and the incorporation of mobile devices and the bring-your-own-device (BYOD) trend.

"These factors create unique challenges for the IT department and how it should manage corporate information, so prospective IT professionals will need to know how to balance providing enterprise security on BYOD technologies while providing device flexibility and ease of use to employees," the article read.

The changes that IT executives are facing can make it difficult to stay up-to-date on the latest technology. For businesses to stay competitive, they must have reliable resources on the ready to answer any potential challenges.
