Study: 98 percent of IT Principals not changing telecommuting policy

Yahoo CEO Marissa Mayer banning telecommuting has been well documented on this blog, as have the varying opinions that many industry experts expressed. The only clear cut trend that seemed to have arisen among all the chatter is that the trend of working outside the office is not going anywhere.

Challenger, Gray & Christmas – a global outplacement and executive coaching firm – noted in a recent study that while companies like Best Buy may have followed Yahoo's example, many others simply decided to keep pushing forward.

"When major companies like Yahoo and Best Buy make notable policy changes, there is no doubt that other employers will take notice, and some may even re-evaluate their policies," explained John Challenger, the company's CEO. "However, it would be misguided to assume that other companies will follow blindly without considering their own unique circumstances."

The study polled 120 human resources executives in the days following Yahoo's announcement. According to the report, 80 percent of respondents currently work in companies that offer some form of telecommuting option to employees. Additionally, 97 percent said that there are no plans to eliminate that benefit.

In the United States, 3.1 million people – excluding the self-employed and unpaid volunteers – considered their home to be their primary place of work in 2011. That number is up 73 percent from 2005. On top of that, 64 million U.S. employees, which is just about half the workforce, holds a job that is compatible with telework.

It is clear that telecommuting is not only hear to stay but that it is growing.
