Businesses today are forced to deal with a number, devices and strategies that affect workflow. In many cases, new innovations have systems that IT Principals must be ready to incorporate. Cloud computing, social media and mobile solutions all fall into this category, but they bring with them new challenges that IT departments can struggle to accomplish without the right resources to back them up.

According to a recent survey of 1,850 IT professionals by Ernst and Young, there are still a number of avenues in which IT Principals are struggling with the security protocols that are coupled with these strategies. Of those that responded, 31 percent saw an increase in the number of security incidents compared to the previous year.

This all feeds into a misconception that IT is becoming easier than ever, when it is actually getting more complex. Paul Venezia has a new column for InfoWorld examining this feeling.

"As time goes on, we have continually adapted and refined these methods to ease administration, streamline common tasks, and lighten our load somewhat," wrote Venezia. "Mind you, we haven't reduced complexity – IT systems are more complex than ever before – but there's much less manual labor involved and fewer repetitive tasks."

While business workflow is getting easier and more streamlined, the systems are more intricate. Because of this, IT Principals are dealing with more than ever before.
