2012, my year in review

Stuart Selbst / Stuart Selbst

Happy New Year 2013, I can’t believe how fast 2012 went by. For me, 2012 was an amazing year. I discovered a lot about myself, my business and my clients. If I can sum it all up in one word, 2012 was the year of “Love.” Allow me to explain…

If you build it, the margins will come.

Stuart Selbst / Stuart Selbst

The industry is changing fast. We keep hearing embrace the cloud and start selling cloud solutions to your clients today or you will get left behind. Didn’t we hear that about managed services just a few years ago?  And look, there are plenty of technology support firms making money without moving to the MSP model.

I make my living coaching and advising managed services providers on their businesses.  Does that mean I think the cloud is what MSP was to break fix 5 years ago? YES IT DOES! I officially state here and now that you need to embrace the cloud. I will also go out on a limb and say if you are going to find success in the cloud, you need to build it yourself.

2012 Partner Meeting Recap

Stuart Selbst / Stuart Selbst

This last week I held the Fall Partner Meeting in Chicago, IL. Thank you to my friends at CompTIA for the use of the boardroom. All of my coaching partners were in attendance except for 2 who were affected by Hurricane Sandy and couldn’t make it because they were attending to their clients needs.

I may not always be right, but I’m never wrong.

My mom used to tell me that she might not always be right, but she was never wrong. Thanks Mom and Garfield the Cat (pictured) for that quote. Recently this saying really hit home for me and now I can say that as a business consultant I’m not always right, but I am never wrong! Here’s the story behind this revelation.

Change is a good thing…and inevitable

Article By Stuart Selbst

If you follow me on my personal Facebook page, you may have seen I posted that Loree is changing jobs. Loree has been at her current job for over 9 years and making a job change after all the time is difficult for many people, including Loree. The decision for her to make this move was not easy for her. Just the interview process for this job took over 3 months. While I was there to “coach” and advise her through the pros and cons of changing jobs, it was ultimately her decision. Personally, I believe that this change is good and will allow Loree to elevate her career and the opportunity that she has in front of her…the sky is the limit. Plus the bump in salary is an added bonus.

Lessons from Dad

Article By Stuart Selbst

I don’t talk much about my family in my blogging and coaching with the exception of my wife Loree. But on this Father’s day, I am moved to talk about lessons I learned from my Dad.

My dad was a career salesman who had a desire to make sure that his customers (that is what he called them back in the day) had the best service in his industry. My father taught me about sales and selling. He said many companies had very similar products and price was often the cause of lost sales. Success was often just about being in the right place at the right time.  As a boy, I would tell my father that I was never going to be a salesman. I was going to be a chef, doctor, fireman or whatever I was thinking on that particular day.

The Week in Review

Article By Stuart Selbst

Earlier this week, I blogged on MSPCoaching.com about choosing a Service Desk.  I also posted 2 videos on the MSP Coaching YouTubeChannel. The first video I posted was about passion and the second one was about process. As we end our week together, I would like to talk more about passion and touch on process.

Choosing an outsourced service desk

Article By Stuart Selbst

As I mentioned in my last post, I attended the Ingram Micro Cloud Summit in Scottsdale, AZ last week. During the summit, Ingram enthusiastically announced a partnership with my good friends at Live Virtual Helpdesk (Live VHD). I have many partners who work with the team at Live VHD and as a result, have been able to exceed their service level agreements. So, what should you be looking for in an outsourced service desk?

Business is like a horseshoe

Article By Stuart Selbst

I attended the Ingram Micro Cloud Summit earlier this week in Scottsdale, AZ. While there, I had the opportunity to catch up with some long time industry leaders including my good friend and mentor, Larry Walsh of The 2112 Group and Channelnomics.

One of the things Larry and I discussed was ways that I, as an MSP Business Coach, and others can truly set themselves apart in business.  Larry talked to me about the, “horseshoe of business.” I’ll try to explain it here.

Let’s get a little crazy

Article By Stuart Selbst

When I work with a partner, part of my job is getting to know them personally. Some partners are very serious and want to stay right on track, while I have others who utilize my MSP Coaching services to bounce ideas off of me and get suggestions for new ways to improve process. Either way you slice it up, I love all of my partners and will do anything to help them.
