The IT skills gap has been a recurring topic of discussion on this blog for some time. The idea of better education, hiring veterans and improving the green card process have been covered, however, the effects of a lack of qualified professionals in the IT channel will have major implications for business cyber security plans.
A recent article from Info Security Magazine cited a recent survey from TEKsystems Network Services. The study found that the rumored skills gap is no longer just talk, as it is starting to have a real-world impact on businesses.
“Half of respondents said that they believe the lack of qualified security talent is approaching a state of critical mass, where their organizations are vulnerable to serious risk exposure,” the article reads. “This includes very basic skill sets: less than 20 percent of respondents are very confident their IT organization has an adequate allocation of information security resources in-house for security policy, identity and access management and information risk management skills.”
The problem is that IT security is continuing to evolve in complexity. The survey found that 60 percent of respondents believe these changes in the marketplace make it difficult to effectively evaluate security programs and design a comprehensive security strategy. Going a step further, a majority of respondents believe their IT departments are too busy handling day-to-day processes to have time for critical strategic information security initiatives.
IT security is something that every organization needs to be on top of, either in-house or, to ensure the highest level of security, with the help of an experienced VAR or MSP.
