‘War Room’ notes highlight need for proper IT project management talent

By now the troubles of the Healthcare.gov website have been well documented. Launched on October 1, the website faced major glitches and has caused much frustration among users. This week we are getting a new look into the “IT chaos” that was going on behind the scenes on launch day.

According to an article from ComputerWorld, on the morning it went live, a “War Room” team gathered to discuss the launch and take notes. This week, U.S. Representative Darrell Issa, the chair of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, released 175 pages of notes that were written by committee members during this time. They only touch on action items, issues and challenges concisely and do not vent any frustration.

The notes chronicle several of the IT problems that were experienced. They include dashboards not showing information, servers accessing incorrect production data, third-party systems being unable to connect to the network for verifications, a lack of server capacity and understaffed IT help desks.

“Given the computer system issues, should we be saying that paper is better for now?” one note read.

It is clear that the Affordable Care Act registration website was not ready for prime time when it launched and this is a perfect example of the need for proper project management when it comes to large technology deployments.
