IT, business relationship gap hurting companies

Gaps seem to be a major problem when it comes to the corporate world. While the “hard skills” gap has been examined at length, yesterday we introduced the idea of a “soft skills” gap. This is the ability for IT professionals to step outside the IT channel and be comfortable with the communication and interpersonal aspects of operations. However, according to a recent article from the Harvard Business Review, both sides of this equation have problems.

From an IT standpoint, technology has been incorporated into nearly every aspect of company operations, which they believe grants them a seat at the decision-making table. Business leaders counter by saying IT professionals do not understand the company, consistently over-promise and innovate slowly. This leads to misunderstandings and half-hearted efforts to rectify the situation.

“Frankly, we are sick and tired of the bickering, especially since the most important point gets lost — the failure to derive the full advantage of information technologies does enormous disservice to companies,” the article reads. “Further, the pace of technological change and the demands to do more with the data grow exponentially and will continue to do so for the foreseeable future. The problem, strategic or not, must be resolved. Smart leaders will ignore the posturing and work to close the gaps.

To rectify this problem, organizations need to come to the table and realize that everyone has one goal—the success of the company.
