IT departments need to enable, not serve, data success

Access to data has becoming a tentpole of many organizations. This can be seen in the growing popularity of "big data" and analytics solutions. However, as the trends start to shift, the IT channel needs to move as well or run the risk of being outdated.

This is the sentiment of a recent Harvard Business Review article that makes the case that IT departments need to stop serving and start enabling.

Bill Franks, the author of the article, said that the traditional IT model that has the tech department as a central point of control over all the data has never been ideal. However, as technology has advanced, the information needs of employees has changed rapidly and the old system no longer works. 

"Business users need increasingly fast, broad, and flexible access to data," Franks said. "It is no longer possible for IT to address every single business request. So, what's an organization to do? A small shift in thinking and process—moving IT from a serving mode to an enabling mode—can make a huge difference."

This idea is not as radical as you may think. It is essentially just empowering employees to work for themselves, as the shackles that come with needing to manage every data need are released.
