Successful big data solutions require a ‘reskill’ of IT talent

While big data is currently one of the buzzwords in the IT channel, many companies have yet to fully understand it. A recent article from ComputerWorld cites several studies that found the big data industry will grow 31 percent annually and could top $50 billion by 2017—at the end of 2012, big data accounted for $11 billion. However, 55 percent of IT Principals said their big data projects have failed.
The question becomes, why? The piece features an interview with Ron Bodkin, the CEO of Think Big Analytics, who tries to answer it.
"Big data project failures can be traced to several root causes: No business goal, no alignment with business outcomes,insufficient budgets, poor planning and failure to recognize project scope. (Don't forget about the data analytics skills shortage that will only get worse over the next five years)," Bodkin said. "Even those who do succeed can fail if the benefits of the big data project aren't realized outside of IT to, say, improve operational efficiency."
He added that there is a "reskill" process that needs to happen, where current IT talent is required to learn how to operate given the changing face of technology. The volume, variety and speed of big data is unlike any business solution currently in play and IT professionals need to be ready to handle it.
