IT skills gap starting to include managers and business leaders

The skills gap has spread and is no longer just affecting IT professionals, as business leaders and managers can now be included on the list of personnel who could benefit from a few training courses.
The reason for this shift is related to the ways that technology has changed over the last few years. The traditional role of technology as a supplemental service to daily operations is gone, as in many instances, IT and business protocols are completely intertwined. What this might mean, for example, is that while sales managers once only had to motivate personnel to close deals and worry about quota, now they need to concern themselves with understanding sales programs and applications that may be in the cloud or on a mobile device.
A recent CIO article featured interviews with several IT leaders talking about this trend. Steve Duplessie, the founder and senior analyst with IT research firm ESG, spoke about how technology has evolved.
"IT transformation from multiple dimensions is transcending upon businesses as they explore new ideas and strategies to embrace IT as a service initiative, data science and big data analytics," Duplessie said. "The challenge is amplified by the fact that implementation initiatives expand well beyond technology as they encompass new business models and create a massive organizational impact that creates a new era of skill sets, different roles and realignment of IT staff."
