Survey: Future IT hiring plans become more complex

With the amount of technological innovation that has been seen in the last few years, it is easy to understand why IT Principals are focusing on the most effective ways to incorporate them into their organizational infrastructures. Each one of them could have a crucial place in the future of the business world, at least according to InformationWeek's 2012 State of IT Staffing Survey.

Chris Murphy, an editor for InformationWeek, recapped the news source's latest report and came away with some interesting results. The study interviewed 1,391 business technology professionals and found that 47 percent of them experienced IT hiring growth in the last year, but the demands were in a number of different areas.

According to the results, there are six main skills that IT departments are seeking out: mobile device, social media, big data, security, help desk and user support, and application development. Of these, apps are considered to be the area of biggest growth, as 25 percent of respondents put it among the top new desired skills. 

"Companies need to shift IT firepower to new project development and away from run-the-business IT operations, and app dev tends to be about new project work," wrote Murphy. "It's also a promising sign for economic growth – companies don't add developers unless they're building new products or supporting new initiatives."

The report also found that the most effective way to handle implementing these skills is not always to hire new, full-time talent. In some instances, project-based outsourcing or internal training can yield better results.
